Frogged for real?
Most Popular Slots
Why did the Frog cross the road? Sounds like a cheesy variation on the classic chicken joke I know but it isn’t, it’s actually a new 5 reel Rival gaming slot called Frogged which pays tribute to the classic 1980’s arcade game frogger. I confess to being a little late starting this review as I found a free play version of the old game online and I had forgotten quite how playable it was!
If you don’t know the original game fear not, Rival have provided a spiritual successor here which is just as enjoyable and holds the additional advantage of providing you with the chance to win some cash rewards for helping our amphibian friend dodge the traffic!
Rival haven’t just relied on retro nostalgia either, the game has some clever 3D animations which integrate well with the bonus features which include two different wilds and re-triggerable free spins. Being a Rival title it won’t be available everywhere but I gave it a go on Box24 Casino this morning so for sure it is out there and accessible for both desktop and mobile play albeit only in real cash mode so far.
Theme & Graphics
I love clever tribute based games and Frogged really nails it, the original arcade game was a split screen with the frog of the title having to cross first a road and then a river. Rival solve this dual game issue by having the main 5x3 reel display and 20 pay-lines covering the road section of the game whist the ‘river rapids round’ is a free spins bonus section, neatly incorporating all the old arcade symbols and visuals into the one slot title.
Symbol wise, the traditional 9-Ace symbols are your low value options which are rendered in old school 8 bit style. The other symbols depend which round you are playing, in the base road game section you find a race car, truck, bus and blue car in order of value highest to lowest. In the river rapids bonus round you will find an alligator or crocodile, snake, turtle and log, the alligator and snake symbols are the only icons in the game to pay out for two of a kind rather than three so watch carefully for those dangerous reptilians!
The music is an arcade throwback and a little cheesy, the animations work well though and aside from the 8 bit low pay symbols all the other icons and both the road and river backdrops have been brought right up to date visually. Overall it’s a cute fun little game to look at.
I called it a little game and with a min bet of just 0.20 per spin even penny slots players will find it accessible, the max bet is 50.00 but I just don’t see this as a high roller game given the theme and features, clever as they are.
The three symbols we didn’t mention so far form the core of the games potential cash rewards starting with the frog itself. This little green fellow is a vertically expanding wild, when he appears on a reel as part of a winning combination he will leap frog up to the reels above, transforming the symbols there and potentially stacking you up bigger win combinations. During the river bonus game he will also grant you a 2x win multiplier.
Next up is the bulldozer, this scatter symbol will grant you 10x your line bet for 5 icons, 3x for four and 1x for 3, more importantly than this extra win is that three of them or more grant you the 7 spins bonus round and if you pick up three more during the spins round it will retrigger!
Last but very definitely not least is the sticky wild icon represented by the fly, the frog’s favourite snack! He will be popular with you too as he stays on the reels for 1 spin whenever he appears and grants a 2x multiplier. Combine this with the alligator symbol which is offering you 1000x your line bet when you fill all five reels and you start to see real cash potential even without a progressive jackpot on offer.
Rival have a huge slot selection already but Frogged is a worthy addition, whether you played the original game or not I think you will find something to enjoy here. I do doubt the long term playability of the game for high limit players and the RTP isn’t the greatest I’ve ever seen, but all in all in I think this game is fun, unique and highly playable.
